The Ultra Hip Side by Side Comparison: The Borg vs The Daleks

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011 | techno blog

The concept of a biological entity taking on the mechanical physical characteristics – or vise versa – has been around since the early sixties and many science fiction writers and television shows have used this idea in very diverse plotlines and themes. In books, Cyborgs don’t necessarily have be evil, in fact they can your average kind of “people” except they have state-of-the-art equipment which they think makes their lives a little easier. However, Television and Film over the past decades have use Cyborgs characters for very different reasons, usually as an enemy of mankind and all life in general. Two of the most famous kinds of evil cyborgs to appear during those times is the Borg and the Daleks. These creatures are just not friendly, they used their technology in order to destroy or create beings just like themselves and always against their will. One character in Star Trek refers to the Borg has the ultimate user while the other is known as the greatest enemy of the Time Lords. Let’s start with the Borg.

The Borg:

It’s fair to say The Borg is one of most appalling civilizations in the Star Trek universe. Taking on both biological and technological features, they are a collection of alien races who force synthetics on their victims. The Borg are not so much interested in destroying other races as they are in assimilating them, to gain knowledge from the individual and in turn make themselves stronger. This is a sharp contrast from the Daleks who simply want to destroy anyone or thing that is not like them.

The Borg has a brutal way in which to assimilate its species, one way is through Nanorobotics, microscopic machine in which they inject into their victim which attacks cells. Nanites are but the first way in which the Borg takes over a species: Sometimes they remove arms and legs and replace with metal prosthesis which is used for certain tasks. Drones, as they are called, are also given optical implants which they can see different spectrums of light.

The Borg do have a kind of hierarchy, a matriarch if you will The Borg Queen has the whole collective in her mind at all times. She is the only Borg in Star Trek history who refers to herself as “I” not “We”. The Queen has in the past tried to build of bridge between humanity and the Borg, first by assimilating Jean-Luc Pidard and then trying try to seduce the android Data.

Both attempts have failed.

According to Star Trek, the enemy the Queen and her Borg have the most difficultly with is not the United Federation of Plants but is a race they have designated Species 8472. The enemy is often thought of as the great opposite of the Borg, for they are creatures highlighted by for their vast biological make-up. Even Species 8742’s ships are living beings. Although the Borg themselves reply on the biological themselves they seem want to divest themselves of this side of their existence completely. In a way they want to but fully mechanical which they feel is the essence of perfection.

However, The Daleks believe they are already perfect, in fact they kill anything that seems to think otherwise and who are different from them. Still, both the Borg and Daleks have very delusional kinds of thinking. So, when it comes down to what choice you would make would you A) would you want your civilizations destroyed or B) to be assimilated? Before we make that kind of choice let’s talk about the other Cyborg in this essay.

The Daleks:

The Daleks are the main antagonist of the Doctor, who belongs to a race called the Time Lord. The Daleks are also time travelers and can manipulate time and space. They have one goal in mind and that is to destroy anything that is not Dalek. They were created by a genius and madman, Davos, many million of years ago after a war gave mutated their biology and they had them very little choice in using technological aspects of their world in order to survive. The transformation made them insane.

While a single Borg could probably not take over the Earth, a single Dalek can and will unless it is stopped. This usually falls to the Doctor, who has stopped them countless times in the past and who the Daleks consider a great enemy of their race (which in way is a complement because after all who would a Dalek really fear, certainly not a human being.)

The physical appears of the Dalek is like this: have you ever seen a salt and pepper shaker make from steal, with bulges sticking out from around the middle? Well, imagine a man-sized version and you get the idea. They have a rotating eye stock which they use to see with, sometimes in a variety of spectrums, an energy gun on their left side and, what appears like a plunger which had crush things with many thousand of pounds of food power and can hack nearly any system. Inside their shells they have biological features – disgusting as they are – usually with a eye and tentacles coming from its very small, mutated body.

The Daleks are evil beyond much human imagination. When they kill they make sure it hurts, unlike the Borg who knows it hurts but thinks they are trying to help a person become better. The Daleks practically fear nothing. Even if the Doctor says they are afraid of him sometimes I don’t think they are really quaking in their boots. They have tried to destroy Earth countless times in the past and have all but failed, but still leaving bodies in their wake. When they come, when the people of Earth know who they are, you can pretty much say this is not the best day of their lives.

So, which race would you want to deal with? I for one would take neither and would call the Doctor as soon as possible. As for the Daleks, they might give the Doctor some problems but the Borg he should have less of a problem.
